Board Certified in Cardiology, Interventional, Endovascular, and Nuclear Cardiology

  • General Cardiology
  • Coronary Interventions
  • Endovascular Interventions
  • Peripheral Interventions

Dr. Obrad S. Kokanovic has lived in Wisconsin since 1991 when he came from Belgrade, Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia) as a teenager directly to Milwaukee. He graduated from West Milwaukee High School in 1992 with honors (summa cum laude) and received a U.S. President’s Fitness Award for excellence.

After high school, Dr. Kokanovic attended the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he majored in molecular biology and graduated with honors (magna cum laude) in 1996. He was a member of prestigious honor societies and a recipient of many awards for academic accomplishments and teaching, including the Ruth Walker Graduating Senior Award for outstanding performance in biological sciences, University (UWM) Tutoring (Teaching) Award, and multiple scholarships, to name a few.

Early Career

Dr. Kokanovic’s early career was devoted to the science of genetics. Prior to attending medical school, he had a successful career in research, participating in the field of genetics in the early stages of human genome sequencing and genotyping projects.

Dr. Kokanovic worked at nationally and internationally known Centers for Human Genetics, participating, elucidating, and growing the field of genetics. He has been part of well-respected teams of scientists studying complex human genetic diseases at prestigious centers such as the Max McGee Research Center for Juvenile Diabetes at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Center for Medical Genetics at Marshfield Clinic.

While in medical school, Dr. Kokanovic had an opportunity to work with stem cells at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine’s Transplantation Surgery Department, again trying to contribute to understanding the potential of stem cells. He has published some of his work in esteemed scientific journals and has presented his work both nationally and internationally.

Medical Training

In Madison, Wisconsin, Dr. Kokanovic joined the ranks of many other Badgers at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine from 2001 to 2005. He was inspired by many great professors and colleagues, especially in the field of internal medicine, and subsequently embarked on a long and arduous mission to become an interventional cardiologist.

From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Kokanovic completed the internal medicine residency program at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, one of the best academic institutions for internal medicine in the nation. He then returned to Milwaukee to complete three years of general cardiology fellowship training at Aurora Health Care from 2008 to 2011, learning and working alongside nationally and internationally recognized experts with the newest and most advanced technologies in the fields of cardiology, interventional cardiology, and electrophysiology.

Following his fellowship training, Dr. Kokanovic was accepted to the interventional cardiology training program at Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University and trained with world-renowned interventional cardiologists, being further exposed to the most advanced state-of-the-art technologies, such as percutaneous core valve implantations, carotid interventions, complex coronary interventions, and peripheral endovascular interventions.

St. Luke’s Aurora in Milwaukee and Detroit Medical Center have both been involved in many large clinical trials testing the latest technologies and paradigms, with which Dr. Kokanovic worked during his training in those particular institutions, giving him an opportunity to further enrich his knowledge and technique.

Dr. Kokanovic has vast experience in the management of general cardiology; interventional cardiology for acute or chronic coronary disease, including high risk coronary interventions using Impella® support; endovascular interventions (carotid interventions, AAA); and peripheral interventions for acute or chronic limb ischemia and chronic limb salvage.

Since completing his fellowships in 2012, Dr. Kokanovic has been practicing in the field of general cardiology, interventional cardiology, and endovascular interventions. He is licensed in 13 U.S. states and has practiced as an interventional cardiologist in multiple states, including Montana, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Indiana, Kansas, and Wisconsin. He has been privileged to practice interventional cardiology and endovascular medicine in over 20 hospitals across the nation.

Dr. Kokanovic has been performing complex coronary interventions with significant experience in acute coronary syndrome setting, complex coronary interventions requiring Impella®, and intra-aortic balloon pump support. Further, he has done endovascular AAA repairs and peripheral interventions including chronic limb ischemia / limb salvage procedures. He is versatile in his overall general practice and has had an enduring record of successful clinical outcomes.

Dr. Kokanovic is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular medicine, interventional cardiology, and endovascular medicine. He is also certified in registered vascular interpretation and nuclear cardiology. He is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and a member of other prestigious societies such as American Medical Association (AMA).

Dr. Kokanovic is constantly bringing his practice up to date and believes strongly in imparting the most current knowledge to patients through education, thus empowering his patients to take control of their lives. He has given lectures and presented his work on the national level, including a presentation of his clinical work at TCT 2012 (publishing an abstract on this work in ACC Journal) and ACC (Montana chapter) guest speaker on advancements of interventional cardiology field.

Patient Care

Dr. Kokanovic has a comprehensive clinic and practice for both general cardiology and interventional/endovascular cardiology. He manages essential cardiology problems including chronic heart failure; arrhythmias,  especially atrial fibrillation; hypertension; dyslipidemia; and pulmonary hypertension, to name a few. He performs and interprets diagnostic tests including transesophageal echocardiogram, echocardiogram, EKG, nuclear stress test, stress echo, and Holter monitor, and he performs pacemaker implantations. His office is equipped with EKG, stress test modalities, echocardiogram, and more.

Dr. Kokanovic’s other gift is being bilingual in English and Serbian, and he can accommodate the large population of people from former Yugoslavia living in the Chicago-Milwaukee area. Furthermore, he believes in treating every patient like a family member and extending the full line of care to ensure an efficient and successful outcome.

Dr. Kokanovic is committed to his patients and works incessantly to ensure success with treatment outcomes. Dr. Kokanovic is an avid believer that prevention is the key to reducing coronary artery and peripheral disease, which are currently reaching an epidemic proportion. Hence, he has included a substantial amount of resources for patients to understand the disease process and how we try to target it and conquer it.
