Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology is the treatment of heart and vascular disease through procedures using a catheter that is placed inside the heart or blood vessel by an interventional cardiologist. These minimally invasive procedures can diagnose and repair many heart conditions and eliminate the need for invasive cardiovascular or cardiothoracic surgery.

Dr. Obrad Kokanovic is board certified in interventional cardiology and received fellowship training alongside world-renowned interventional cardiologists. Procedures he performs include:

  • Angioplasty and coronary stent implantation (both drug-eluding stents [DES] and bare-metal stent [BMS])
  • Complex coronary intervention
  • Impella®-supported circulatory pump placement during and after complex high risk coronary interventions or management of cardiogenic shock
  • Manual or mechanical coronary aspiration thrombectomy during acute coronary syndrome for clot removal
  • Coronary atherectomy using rotablator and CSI orbital atherectomy for complex calcified blockages and chronic total occlusions (CTO)
  • Graft interventions
  • Coronary artery laser atherectomy
  • Intra-aortic balloon pump insertion for homodynamic support
  • Aortic balloon valvuloplasty
  • Atrial septic defect (ASD) closure
